![]() I thought I wanted the sort of career that would let me stand out as an over-achiever, as an intelligent woman, that would put those frumpy stay-at-home moms to shame. I thought I would work full-time with kids, even very young ones. I thought waiting five years for kids (till 29 or so) was my minimum anyway. ![]() I also simply hadn’t thought much about kids before, as I was in no rush to have them. Somehow I’d neglected to consider how sexism (via inflexible systems and bad attitudes of superiors) could affect my career, regardless of how egalitarian my marriage was. It felt wussy, in a way, to back down just because things would be hard, but in the end, I was convinced: I would much rather give up a PhD for now (with the option of returning later) than be miserable fighting the system for the next 10+ years.Īll of this came as a surprise to me, as I’d never considered how much pregnancy itself would frustrate my plans. A PhD just wouldn’t work for me right now, not only because of its length, but also because of everything that comes after-the pressure to publish and to find a tenure-track position. Through the essays of these real-life mothering grad students and professors, my suspicions were confirmed. Jeremiah continued to encourage me to not give up, so I bought a book called Mama, PhD. But pregnancy was going to cause trouble, almost inevitably. If children dropped into our laps as five-year-olds, or even toddlers, maybe we could make a way. We could do not only the dual-career thing but the dual-academic-career thing. He promised to be a total team player, sharing housework and childcare as equally as possible. My husband didn’t want me to give up on my goals because I felt confined by gender. I, however, wanted to be sure I wasn’t forced to have kids over 35 if I didn’t want to, and I wanted to make certain I had room for as many as we decided to have. ![]() If you’re willing to consider just having one or two kids, you wait to start until your late 30s and early 40s. If you’re willing to take fertility drugs or abort a baby with birth defects, you can keep going into your late 30s and early 40s. Your risks for everything go up your baby’s risks for everything go up. Over 35 you are an “advanced maternal age” patient. If I was graduating at 30, would I be able to be have done having kids at 35?ģ5 is the even-more-magic number. I’m not sure what is magical about 30, but 30 felt impossible. Ending a PhD at 29 somehow felt a lot more do-able than ending a PhD at 30. I did, however, have an important decision to make: Would I reapply to PhD programs next year? And I eventually decided I wouldn’t. I had hoped to be their peer and friend, but even given this unfortunate news, I only wished them the best. I did not feel bitterness towards those who had been accepted, as I had met them and thought they were both brilliant and fun. In March, I was put “at the top” of the wait list, and soon after I received an official notice that I was not rejected per se-but there would not be space for me in the incoming class. Lastly-and thankfully not during the aforementioned trip-I had a brief pregnancy scare (which made me feel a lot of things). Secondly, I went on said trip (which made me feel professional and mature). First, I was invited on an all-expense-paid weekend trip to Baylor University where I had applied to a sociology of religion PhD program (which made me feel important and intelligent).

Our results call for adapting the temperature-driven hypotheses of ecophysiological models predicting leaf-out to include spring frost probability. The high photoperiod sensitivity in white spruces could counterbalance climate warming and limit future premature leaf-out, whereas the low photoperiod sensitivity in black spruce should not restrain leaf-out advancement with climate warming. ![]() Onset of spruce bud flush is driven by spring frosts and photoperiod, but once started, bud phenology responds to temperature. At intraspecies level, the two southern white spruce seed sources opened their buds earlier than the local source and were more sensitive to photoperiod, which increased their exposure to spring frosts. Photoperiod sensitivity was higher for white spruce compared to black and Norway spruce and reached its maximum in the temperate forest. Buds of all spruce species were sensitive to frost probability for early phenological stages, whereas growing degree-days controlled the remaining stages. ![]() At both plantation sites, white spruce bud flush began and ended earlier compared to black and Norway spruce. We used mixed binomial regressions and AICc model selection to determine the best environmental variables predicting each transition from one stage of bud phenology to the next. We expected that bud break timing for boreal species and seed sources would be better synchronized with the decrease in frost probability than for nonlocal species and seed sources. We aimed to determine inter- and intraspecies variations in bud break timing and sensitivity to air temperature and photoperiod. We monitored bud flush phenology of three white spruce seed sources (one local seed source from the boreal mixedwood forest and two seed sources from the temperate forest), one black spruce seed source originating from the boreal mixedwood forest and four nonlocal Norway spruce seed sources in 20 in two plantations located on both sides of the temperate-boreal mixedwood forest ecotone in eastern Canada (Quebec). We hypothesized that due to their damaging effect on buds, spring frosts exert a stronger control on bud phenology than do growing degree-days. Climate warming-driven early leaf-out is expected to increase forest productivity but concurrently increases leaf exposure to spring frosts, which could reduce forests' net productivity. ![]() Various lines and area fills can be shown or hidden, and their color and line-widths specified. administrative border) data from the Natural Earth Dataset. ![]() They then compared the quality of pictures taken at various angles across the scene, and found the new lens produced images of the stripes that were crisp and clear, even at the edges of the camera’s view, spanning nearly 180 degrees. The team used the imaging setup equipped with the metalens to snap pictures of a striped target. In one demonstration, the new lens is tuned to operate in the mid-infrared region of the spectrum. As long as you design the back side properly, you can be sure to achieve high-quality imaging across the entire panoramic view.” “The light will then hit different parts of the backside, from different and yet continuous angles. ![]() “When light comes in through this aperture, it will refract at the first surface of the glass, and then will get angularly dispersed,” Shalaginov explains. On the front side, the team placed an optical aperture, or opening for light. ‘We’ve designed the back side structures in such a way that each part can produce a perfect focus,” Hu says. The team determined the corresponding pattern of meta-atoms and carved this pattern into the back side of the flat glass. In conventional fisheye lenses, the curvature of the glass naturally creates a distribution of phase delays that ultimately produces a panoramic image. For instance, light may take longer to scatter, or propagate off one shape versus another - a phenomenon known as phase delay. The team then used lithographic techniques to carve a pattern of optical structures into the film.Įach structure, or “meta-atom,” as the team refers to them, is shaped into one of several nanoscale geometries, such as a rectangular or a bone-shaped configuration, that refracts light in a specific way. ![]() Their new metalens is a single transparent piece made from calcium fluoride with a thin film of lead telluride deposited on one side. Hu and his colleagues instead came up with a simple design that does not require additional components and keeps a minimum element count. To expand the field of view further would traditionally require additional optical components to correct for aberrations, or blurriness - a workaround that would add bulk to a metalens design. Previously, scientists have designed metalenses that produce high-resolution and relatively wide-angle images of up to 60 degrees. Metalenses, while still largely at an experimental stage, have the potential to significantly reshape the field of optics. ![]() Hu’s MIT coauthors are Mikhail Shalaginov, Fan Yang, Peter Su, Dominika Lyzwa, Anuradha Agarwal, and Tian Gu, along with Sensong An and Hualiang Zhang of UMass Lowell. Hu and his colleagues have published their results today in the journal Nano Letters. This isn’t just light-bending - it’s mind-bending.” “The fact that this can actually realize fisheye images is completely outside expectation. “This design comes as somewhat of a surprise, because some have thought it would be impossible to make a metalens with an ultra-wide-field view,” says Juejun Hu, associate professor in MIT’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The low-profile lenses might also be integrated into medical imaging devices such as endoscopes, as well as in virtual reality glasses, wearable electronics, and other computer vision devices. The new design could potentially be adapted for a range of applications, with thin, ultra-wide-angle lenses built directly into smartphones and laptops, rather than physically attached as bulky add-ons. The lens works in the infrared part of the spectrum, but the researchers say it could be modified to capture images using visible light as well. In this case, the new fisheye lens consists of a single flat, millimeter-thin piece of glass covered on one side with tiny structures that precisely scatter incoming light to produce panoramic images, just as a conventional curved, multielement fisheye lens assembly would. The design is a type of “metalens,” a wafer-thin material patterned with microscopic features that work together to manipulate light in a specific way. It is the first flat fisheye lens to produce crisp, 180-degree panoramic images. Now engineers at MIT and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell have designed a wide-angle lens that is completely flat. Their spherical, multipiece design makes fisheye lenses inherently bulky and often costly to produce. To capture panoramic views in a single shot, photographers typically use fisheye lenses - ultra-wide-angle lenses made from multiple pieces of curved glass, which distort incoming light to produce wide, bubble-like images.
